Detroit and the Jazz Boom: 1917-1940 The legendary music city known as the Motor Town shaped more than just R & B music of the 1970s. Before that, Detroit was a distinguished jazz hub able to compete against elite jazz forces in St. Louis, New Orleans, and Chicago by branding itself as the city of big band flavor. The migration of jazz musicians northward to Detroit and the growth of Detroit became pivotal in the molding of America's jazz sounds for three key eras: 1917-1922 when jazz was forming from the blend of blues and ragtime music, 1923-1929 when big bands created the reputation of jazz as carefree and rebellious, and 1930-1940 when the swing sound became popular. |

The Vocal Jazz
Resource The Jazz Vocal Resource is just that - A resource for the jazz vocalist, the vocal jazz educator, and fans of vocal jazz. In our research on the internet, we found that, while there were a virtual bounty of sites dedicated to the jazz instrumentalist, none could be found for the vocalist. There is a degree of solidarity within the instrumental jazz community which seems to be lacking in its vocal counterpart. This site is our effort to help bring about that sort of solidarity. |

What
is Jazz? A four part ARTSEDGE lecture series, recorded live at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Dr. Billy Taylor, noted jazz pianist, historian, and educator, shares glimpses of his extensive knowledge of jazz music from its roots in the African-American slavery experience, through the early days of ragtime, and onward through swing, bop, and progressive jazz. Dr. Taylor combines academic research with a wealth of personal knowledge of the music and shares many fascinating anecdotes about the great artists of jazz. He cautions, however, that four hours is only long enough to scratch the surface. For an in depth look at jazz history, get a copy of "Jazz Piano, A Jazz History", or better yet, enroll in Dr. Taylor's semester long jazz history course at Rutgers University. |
